Change of Plans! Sunday October 12, 2008

Sunday we were planning to go to Lauren's (Ben and Robbie's baby) Blessing. On Saturday a major snow storm moved through Burley and Declo. They ended up with about 18 inches of snow. Well we didn't get the storm here, so even though my parents told us not to come we decided to go anyway. Gwen had called my mom and told her the roads were terrible through AF and we looked on Doppler radar. Things looked clear through Snowville. The roads were dry, so we were completely surprised when traffic was stopped and backed up. They had closed the roads! The crazy thing was that there was no sign of the road closure, so there were thousands of other cars and trucks in our same plight. We ended up getting to the turn around and headed back for home.
When we got to the Howell exit (Thiakol ATK), Garrick said he'd always wanted to drive out there and see what was out there. I said, "Too bad we just passed the exit. This would have been a good day to take a drive." Well that was what Garrick was hoping to hear I guess, because we turned at the next turn around and headed to ATK.
They have a neat Rocket display, and the kids liked getting out of the car and running around a bit, even though it was quite cold.

After we looked around at the Rocket Launchers, we saw a sign that said 12 miles to Promotory Point. This is where the railroads came together. WE were not expecting the visitors center to be open on a Sunday, but we thought we would drive out there anyway, and see what there was. To our surprise it was open because it is a national parks site. It was very neat to see the steam engines. We just missed when they fire up the steam engines and drive them about a little. But the steam was still coming off the engines and the engineers were out there cleaning the trains. WE also watched a movie about the process of building the rails and the importance of it in connecting the country.

In the end we were sad we didn't get to go to Declo for the BLessing and to see our family, but it turned out to be a nice day. A fun memory for our family. I never would have done that without Garrick. He's the fun one in our family. We just wish we had packed a lunch and not worn our church clothes!
